May 9, 2025

This is the first update in many months. I held off because I believe the first online source for town news and updates should be its own website. The town website has not looked very good in years and we (mainly Karissa) have re-vamped it, so it better matches what the State requires of municipalities.

Documents will be better organized and available to the public; news and notices will be prominently displayed. There is a monthly calendar to look at under the Living Here tab at the top of the website. It is a work in progress, but we have made so much progress over the past month.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Wilmington recently replaced generator at the Community Center/Town Offices. The old one had been around too long and did not have enough oomph to run the lights without those blinking. Plus it was hard to repair or buy replacement parts.

Thanks very much to Darin for helping to coordinate the bids and to other town employees for helping to get the building ready.

We have also started to get quotes to repair and/or replace various old systems in the town offices and teamed up with the Fire Department for a grant on alarm systems. Grants normally take a while, and it is even more unknowable with what’s going on in Washington. More information when it arrives.

SUMMER SEASON

Wilmington continues to take applications for lifeguards and for counselors in the summer Youth program. Please, if you or someone you know might be interested, have them get in touch with me or Karissa.

Town Clean Up is on May 24, 2025, from 9 AM to Noon. Please gather at the pavilion at the beach, the volunteers will have bags and water, and coordinate parts of the road. Parks and Highway will pick up full bags on the side of the road.

The Parks and Highway Department are getting the Town ready for the summer season with Memorial Day banners, mowing, painting, replacing rotted parts of fences. As a side note, John and Ashton now have more help. The two of them did a terrific job over what was a real

winter last year—the skating rink was in top shape and there were few thaws and deep freezes that can ruin the season. Hats off to Ashton as well for the time in the John Deere working on snowy sidewalks.

CALL FOR HELP—COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Wilmington has started to apply for NYS grants to pay for consultants to help with a comprehensive plan. Wilmington’s comprehensive plan is 50 years old.

For comprehensive plans to work, the community needs public help and participation—the more information is gathered, the better guide for the community for affordable housing, zoning, business development, etc. On a business note, one of the prerequisites for important NYS grants is whether a town has a comprehensive plan.

Ideally, Wilmington needs to attract 5 to 10 volunteers to serve on a Planning Committee to drive the planning process and provide input to the consultants. So, are you interested in providing your ideas to make our Town a better place to live? Do you want to make sure our Town is on the right path for the future?

If so, please call, stop by, write, or email (townsupervisor@townofwilmington.org) so we can discuss further. Thanks very much.
