SUPERVISORS REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING 9-20-24
This week follows a harvest theme.
EQUINOX AND HARVEST MOON
Sunday, September 22nd is the autumnal equinox. That was quick! But I
am not sure how much I would like really extended periods of light, and
happily, it is not a question that I will face.
Earlier this week there was an incredible Harvest Moon, made more
incredible because it was also a supermoon and at its closet distance to
the Earth. And there was a partial eclipse.
The clear dry weather this week made for a good show. I never prepare
well enough to photo these events (and wouldn’t know how to make
my phone take a good picture), so today’s photo is the waning Harvest
Moon on the shoulder of Esther.
ADIRONDACK HARVEST FESTIVAL
I posted earlier this week a flyer for the Adirondack Harvest Festival
(tomorrow, September 21, 2024) at the Essex County Fairgrounds in
Westport. It runs from noon to 5 pm—with wagon and pony rides, live
music, workshops, farmers market, and more. There is no admission fee
and the weather looks, once again, dry. I am heading there to support
the farmers, the volunteers who make the event happen and to enjoy
the festival. More info at adirondackharvest.com/festival.
OKTOBERFEST 2024
According to Wikipedia, Oktoberfest originally started as a celebration
for a king’s wedding, but later added a festival to celebrate and
promote agriculture in Bavaria.
On September 21 and 22, Whiteface celebrates its annual Oktoberfest
with music, dancing, wursts and delicious beer. Tickets are needed with
more info at https://whiteface.com/todo/oktoberfest/
BOARD WORK SESSION NEXT WEEK
The town board will meet at a work session on Wednesday, September
15, 2024, 4:00 pm at the Community Center.
The town is getting its tentative budget ready for 2025. At the
beginning of October, the board will have that tentative budget and for
most of October will have get the chance to discuss, review and amend
the tentative budget, before settling on a preliminary budget for the
public to review and comment on.
In any case, at the work session the board will review its own schedule
in October to meet to go over the tentative budget.
The other items are: to discuss a NYS grant awarded to Wilmington to
fund a sedimentation study for the AuSable River; to discuss next year’s
playgrounds and employee handbook; and to return to the question of
appointments to the zoning board of appeals and re-appointments to
the planning board.
The agenda for this meeting will be posted on the town’s website.
Thanks, and have a good weekend!
